Would You Have Smiled?

Literal are the young.
Expressions they do not get.

Hyperbole, similes, metaphor
Are lost in preschool land.

Misunderstandings do occur
If this should be forgotten.

All this we were reminded
When middle son his pants did drop

After Daddy remarked
to our skinny boy
“You have no butt at all.”

Turning around,
His naked tush
Our son did flash.

“See? I do have a butt!”
As Daddy was proven wrong.

Mommy hid her smile
As the thought occurred
A blog post she now has!

Linking up with Mama Kat’s Writer’s Workshop and the prompt: Write a poem about a time someone made you smile. Okay, so I’m not a poet, but this definitely made me smile! And laugh until I almost cried.

Pssst, did you get a chance to check out any of the Pour Your Heart Out links yesterday? Some great stories there!

I so enjoy how literal the young kids can be. I even enjoyed it a little bit longer than normal with my oldest. His AS has made it difficult for him to learn "Hyperbole, similes, metaphor".

I fight back the smiles often.

TOO cute… those moments are getting few and far between in my house and I miss them!

Okay your comments are back for me. The weirdest thing ever.

How absolutely adorable! And the best part of this is, when he's eighteen and he brings his girlfriend around, you can share this with her!

Ahhh, the power of the blog.

Ha Ha. Love it. Ever since I started blogging back in the Spring, I'm constantly smiling to myself because I know my boys have just given me something to blog about. I only wish I had started when they were younger!

    Very cute!

It's so true how literal kids are! You really have to be careful sometimes what you say to them!

    Oh..sarcasm… also missed by kids!

So cute! It reminds me of how my youngest will not accept an actual "name" for anything yet. The neighbor's cat isn't Fluffy, it's "no Mommy, that's a kitty cat!"

or if I call her GoofBall she will say "no Mommy, I'm A'mia!!(Amelia)"

I would have smiled. What a cutie.

Yesterday my husband did the "hey you have something on your shirt" bit on my daughter. When she looked down at his pointing finger he booped her in the nose.

It took four times before she got that it was a joke.

Sometimes the cute turns a bit painful!

  37. Kim says

I applaud you for having the courage to write a poem, I chickened out and wrote the coffee list. But I have to say that my son is almost three and I love this age. Everything is so literal and he has a bazillion questions about everything but there is such a sweet innocence that gets lost when we get older.
