Now that the kids are back in school all day, I get told all the time that it must be nice to have all this free time. As if free time ever really exists.
As a work from home mom, I always have some sort of work to do. And if I accomplish everything on my must-do list for work for that day, there’s still housework to get done. Not that I don’t occasionally chuck it all and have a day just for me, but most days, I’m busy from the time I drop off the kids at school until the alarm reminds me that it’s time for pick up.
What I try to remind myself, whether it’s work or housework I’m doing, is that most people take some sort of break during the day. Even if it’s only 15 minutes, it can be the breather I need to be able to refocus (or simply not be as cranky).
In 15 minutes, I can do any of these things: Read a chapter or two in a book. Though I have to go into this one with a set amount that I can read or I’ll get sucked into the story.
Try a mud mask or exfoliating scrub on my face. Cleaning the house isn’t so relaxing, but cleaning my skin can be.
Paint my toenails. My fingernails take a little longer, but pretty toes don’t take long.
Stretch. I learned a series of stretches at a yoga festival and doing them regularly, even for just a few minutes a day, really helps.
Take a walk. It’s not long, but getting outside into some fresh air can clear my head.
Text with a friend to catch up. A phone call can easily go long and I’m not a big phone talker anyway, plus texts can be responded to when both people have time for it and aren’t being interrupted.
Take a cookie break. Fiber One has a New Peanut Butter Soft-baked Cookie, as well as Crunchy Sugar Cookies and Chocolate Chip. I like all of them, though the Sugar cookie is my favorite. With 110 calories (or 120 for the peanut butter cookie) and 20% daily value of fiber in Fiber One cookies, I don’t have to fight my instincts, I can have a cookie, and then go back to my usual routine, ready to work.
What do you do to take a short break during your day? Tell me in the comments and you will be entered to win a $100 Visa gift card!
