Things They Can’t Say: Holiday Edition

‘Tis the Season for holiday joy… and holiday annoyances. I asked bloggers for what they love or hate most about this time of year.

I am looking forward to setting up my Christmas decorations! Yes, it is a lot of work and sometimes I wonder if it is worth it, but then I see the excitement in my kids eyes and I know it is worth it.  Plus, I love the way my house looks decorated too. -Emmy, Emmy Mom One Day at a Time

This is so simple, but I love unpacking and setting up our Nativity Scene. We have a beautiful set of Willow Tree figures that were a wedding gift. We have a separate set for our preschooler who is welcome to play/manipulate it. Last year he added a pink Cadillac, a few dinosaurs, gave one of the Wisemen a desk and another one a bed and put Mary on the potty. I’m really looking to see what his additions are this year. The world through the lens of a small human is so sweet.

Now that that’s out of the way, what I’m really looking forward to the most- peppermint mocha from Starbucks. Shhhhhhhhh. At 4 bucks and 400 calories a pop, they are such an indulgence! -NJ, A Cookie Before Dinner

I’m looking forward to the holidays this year because it will be Spike’s first Christmas.  It is also the first year I think Bink will “get” Christmas.  We have a tradition every year that we do one fun Christmas-y thing as a family every day in December. It’s a fun way to connect as a family. -Caitlin, Pacifier in My Pocket
What I am most looking forward to is the looks of sheer joy on the faces of my kids. Especially Gia because she is at an age where she is gets it and still believes so it is all magical. I LOVE the excitement over everything…ornaments, shiny garland, lights on the trees…the elaborate toy displays. She is in a constant state of wonder. -AnnMarie, Tidbits from the Queen of Chaos
I’m looking forward to seeing who asks me when I am planning on having another baby. Really, bring it on… ’cause I have LOTS of inappropriate questions ready for them. -Cheryl, All Dressed Up With Nothing to Drink
I love all the family time and the magical quality of the season. Love abounds and there are so many smiles and lots of laughter.
I also love that by the end of Christmas day when I’m so sick of the abounding love I could throw up that I can have my margarita disguised in a Santa mug.
Bottom’s up! -Macey, Living in France
I am most looking forward to Christmas Eve. I realized last year that I love it. I love the mood, the anticipation and how cute and sweet the kids are. I love getting everything set up for them to discover in the morning. -Jennifer, Just Jennifer
December blows for me because my hubs is a caterer and so I barely see him…which means I have to deal with zooey on vacation kids and try to get all the Christmas stuff done.  But we celebrate Christmas Eve at my house, so I can drink all I want since I’m not driving…. -Holly, Holly’s House

It’s my favorite time of the year, these two months after Halloween. I feel my heart get lighter, I hear jingle bells, I indulge in the corny sappy movies, the  heavenly scent of vanilla and peppermint and taste of Pumpkin pie and candy canes on my tongue.

I love wrapping the gifts, trimming the tree and  having Wednesdays off with my husband to see movies and do all our Christmas shopping.  As a mom, I love watching my children learn the real message of Christmas,  I delight in telling them about Baby Jesus, having them help me set up the nativity and watch in my own childlike wonder as they take Santa into their hearts.

I live in Hope at this time of year. Hope that we will all be one community of people, one race of human beings if only for a little while during this most WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR. -Kir, The Kir Corner

The thing that makes the holidays so much more special for me now seriously are my kids. I LOVE seeing their faces light up and their belief in the magic of the holidays. The extended family stress I could do without.

Great post and I love the variety of answers!  And yes– I think the age of my kids definitely helps add to it’s magic.  I hope i can somehow keep it fun and wonderful even when they are teenagers who don’t care as much.

I am really looking forward to our Advent traditions this year!  I am really NOT looking forward to winter vacation… 3 weeks.  UGH.  But at least we can take it easy on our morning routine.. hmmm.

I’m so glad I wasn’t the only one that wasn’t super sweet. LOL Just cuz I don’t want to be alone, really. 🙂
I love all of these though, some of them are SO sweet they make me happy!

Great post, Shell. I enjoyed reading everyone’s snippets. For me:  I love thinking about gifts for loved ones, putting up the tree and decorating ginger bread houses with my girls. I hate shopping for all those great gifts (though Amazon makes my life so much simpler), taking down the tree and cleaning up after our ginger bread house festivities – the royal frosting that sticks like glue to everything!

I think I relate most to the one about it maybe not being worth it to decorate. I agree that seeing the kids faces light up makes it worth it, but man, I will be psyched when they’re older and I can cut WAY back on the decorations.

Love this and how everyone has their own things they do but also the underlying feeling of love and togetherness. One of my favorite things is sitting by the lit tree with a hot chocolate and the lap top in my lap while listening to music and enjoying the quiet.

I’m excited because even though it’s looking 98% likely we will have our Christmas in a hotel, Nate finally ‘gets’ Christmas and it’s making it fun to see it through his eyes!

I love Kir’s comment because that’s really what it’s all about. I love how the world is magical at Christmas, I love looking at Christmas lights and listening to Christmas music. It’s like peace and hope and joy are in the air. This post made me smile.
