We take our three boys on many adventures. They are so active, pretty much every day is an adventure in itself.
But when we travel, our stories get a little bigger. Sometimes in a good way, and sometimes in a truly icky way… like the Great Puke Incident of Spring Break 2011.
We were on our way from coastal North Carolina to Pittsburgh. Our kids are used to very flat, very straight roads. Once we started climbing hills and going around sharp turns, our oldest’s stomach started to rebel.
Since that’s been known to happen to him when we make this trek, we were prepared with a barf bag for him. But we weren’t prepared for him to NOT STOP PUKING.
We had to pull over so that the bag wouldn’t overflow.
And when he started to climb out of the van to get outside into the fresh air, he puked AGAIN, all down the middle aisle of the van, hitting his two younger brothers with some of the splash.
Then, this little guy…
…turns out to be a sympathetic puker and starts throwing up from the smell.
So, we’re on the side of a highway, with two kids pretty much covered in puke and a third who has now been splashed by the other two. Still about 5 hours of the drive left to go, a total stinky mess in the van…
And someone’s got to clean this mess up. Hubs starts heaving at the smell. So it’s up to mom, of course, to deal with all the icky messes so we can get back on the road.
Believe it or not, we didn’t give up road trips after that incident, though we do make sure we have spare clothes at the ready, along with cleaning supplies!
The Clorox Ick Awards
Clorox is teaming up with Chicago improve troupe The Second City Communications for the Clorox Ick Awards on Wednesday, April 9 from 6-10 p.m. ET. The #ickies promise to be the messiest virtual awards show ever, featuring real-time comedy inspired by your real-life moments.
The Second City Communications will be turning tweets into #ickies video skits throughout the awards show. You can help pick the winners by voting for your favorites and win big as they give out $2,500 in prizes.
If you have a hilariously icky moment you want to nominate in advance, you can share it by using #ickies and then tune in to the first hour of the awards to see if it is featured in the opening number with a surprise celebrity guest. Though our Puke Incident of Spring Break 2011 is gross, I’m thinking that if I reach back to baby days, I can tweet: Instead of napping, my 1y/o was fingerpainting his textured bedroom walls, crib rails, and face with poop. #ickies Y’all, I just can’t even. *Shudder*
Don’t forget to visit http://bit.ly/1pAc9pq and sign up for Clorox’s email newsletter to learn more about how Clorox can help you laugh through the mess. Follow @Clorox on Twitter and share your “icky moment” using the hashtag #ickies to be entered to win.
What was one of your icky moments?

Yeah! I’ll be at that Twitter party! Parents see more ick than anyone! #ickies!
We really do! It was hard to figure out which moment to share because there have been so many!
I am dealing with potty training right now, so I have a lot of ickie moments. It’s crazy how I forget that it can be from that big gap between this child and the last.
Oh yes! Potty training is full of ick. Good luck!
I’m like your hubby, I am heaving just reading this, too funny story.
It was so bad. We ended up pulling over again and throwing out their soiled clothes because the smell was making all of us sick.
Yup, I have two boys and sometimes I don’t even want to know. But they really can be gross sometimes.
My boys manage to find messes every where they go. Sometimes I just want to tell them to hose off outside.
Ugh I have had so many icky moments. Most involving poop. Not very fun at all! My kiddos have given me a run for my money!
So gross, right? I still get creeped out, remembering scrubbing poop out of the textured walls!
With three kids there are way too many icky moments. I suppose diaper blow outs are right up there.
For sure. Especially when I would be holding them when they happened!
Oh yuck! My brother used to vomit everywhere we went as kids, so I feel for your son who was splattered by vomit.
Yuck! I got car sick when I was a kid- my poor brothers!
I’m sure there was poop, spit up and boogers involved! The joys of mommyhood
Of course! My yuckiest spit up moment was when my youngest, who was just over 1 at the time, spit up all down my dress at my brother’s wedding reception.
So many icky moments…the best was our toddler throwing up in her car seat. We were finding chunks for weeks!
Oh, yuck! It’s really bad in a car seat since it gets into the crevices!
We drove 5 hours to Charlotte, NC for a blogging conference in 2012. My husband had JUST gotten over a stomach bug and I was in the middle of it. Though I didn’t get sick along the way, our (then almost 2 year old) son did. It was terrible!!!
Oh no! That’s terrible timing!
Yuck and Ickies the kids puking in the car is the worst.. the smell. talk about a parenting moment.
It’s so terrible. We ended up stopping and throwing their soiled clothes in the trash because we couldn’t stand the smell.
Oh. My.! Now that is a seriously icky story, that I don’t envy! Yikes!! My story is a little less stinky, one time my son got gum stuck in his eyebrows and eyelashes from blowing a big bubble over his face while we were at the movie theater. I’ll never forget it, fortunately it makes me laugh every time!
That would make me laugh, too!
No children, but I could tell you a few icky stories from my husband!
Males are messy, no matter the age!
Ugh I hate car sickness. I get it and so does another one of my kids. Sympathetic puker makes it so much worse then it already was.
I don’t get it quite as bad as when I was younger, but it’s a terrible feeling.
Oh my goodness! That is so gross! We have had a few puking sessions in the car. Cleaning carseats is the worst!
It’s so hard- it gets into all the crevices.
Anything that has to do with puke is my icky moment. If I see or smell puke, I also puke. Blah.
I almost puked from the smell in the van after this happened. We ended up stopping again and throwing out their clothes so we didn’t have to deal with the smell for the rest of the drive.
Ugh! I have been there before. Though that isn’t my ickiest moment it ranks right up there.
My kids have given me so many to choose from. Unfortunately!
So many ick moments and my daughter is only 2! I think the worst was when she peed all over me when she was a newborn. Total ick!
Definite ick. When I was trying to change his diaper, my oldest peed all over the carpet at my husband’s boss’s house. I was so embarrassed!
Red has been potty training… and last week he pooped in the bathtub for the babysitter!! Ack! At least it wasn’t me!
Oh, man. Extra tip for that babysitter!
OMG that is s truly icky moment.
It really was. The smell was awful.
OMG!! You have a known puker…and all three are covered in mess to some degree…and then you discover you also have a SYMPATHETIC PUKER…and you have 5 hours to go?!?! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! I definitely think you are in the running for an ICKY award!!
Just tell me, have you traveled by car since then? I think I would just resign myself to staycations from here on out. THANK GOODNESS FOR CLOROX! –Lisa
Surprisingly, we have. We moved our regular puker up to the front and he has a puke bag attached to the seat in front of him. And we give him Dramamine. That has helped a lot.
yea, i have a carsick girlie in my life. and when she loses it, it’s never just once. EVER.
which is why she wore an 18 month random tank top as a tube skirt one day last summer LOL
Oh, that is hilarious! The tank top, not the puke. 😉
OMG! I have so been there before…with myself! Note: Do not throw up out the window while car is running. It won’t be pretty…it will be icky!!!!
I used to get terrible car sickness when I was younger. I tried to puke out the window and it was so messy.
The funny thing is that with kids, a lot of the happiest memories involve icky things. The more kids, the more ick.
That is so true! My boys manage to find or create messes everywhere!
The ick moments are definitely my least favorite. I didn’t realize just how tough of a stomach I had until I became a mom.
Mine has had to get stronger since having kids. There’s really no choice!
After the fact, I’m sure it’s a hysterical family memory. However, in the moment that was definitely pure ICK!
When I was a kid, I used to get nauseated and vomit when travelling over a long distance. I know this is an icky stuff. But thankfully, I overcame that problem and don’t have any problem now when travelling. 🙂
Love Clorox wipes! And you are right, life is beautiful and icky! 🙂
Oh no I couldnt have dealt lol youre stronger than me. When all 3 of my kids got the stomach virus at the same time…I thought I was going to die!
Kiddie vomit. THE WORST!! On New Year’s Eve, after a nice night out with my husband, we come home to a child who literally just projectile vomited all over. We thank our sitter and are like … well there goes that good night! 😉 We can only laugh about it now. Our son went on to puke during our Valentine’s Day date too…got a call to COME HOME from the sitter… Maybe my son just likes to puke on our date nights…. what’s that about!?
That is totally a icky moment! I would have died! haha
My ickiest moment is anytime a child throws up. Blech I don’t do well with it at all.
Oh man, that IS quite the icky story! I’m so thankful we don’t have these issues with my kids. I get a bit car sick but never to the point of vomiting. I have some friends who deal with the same thing with their kids though… All 3 of the kids get car sick very easily, and I’ve heard this same type of story from them a few times. They haven’t given up traveling either! 🙂
Baby + Bouncing + food = ICK! There have been so many ick moments it’s hard to pick the worst.
Ahh, so many icky moments to recall. Spit up in the cat seat is no fun, especially on the highway! I remember being so happy when I saw the next exit so I could pull over and clean kiddo up.
Any time my children have a dirty diaper it’s an ICK moment for me. Oh my gosh. I couldn’t deal with the puking. I’d be puking along with the kids. LOL
Oh you poor thing, puke is the most awful thing to deal with! My daughter got sick on Black Friday, my husband was at home taking care of her…well, he doesn’t do puke and literally like 8 hrs later I came home and the puke was STILL on the floor by her bed. Talk about ick! I swear I cleaned the carpet 20x and still it has a bit of a funky smell…..
Clorox gets things so sanitized it’s not even funny. We use Clorox for all important and deep cleaning 🙂
Oh no! I don’t do throw up very well either. Luckily, my hubby is good about it.
Oh…just reading your descriptions of the puking and splashing has me nauseous. I don’t know if I could’ve done it, I’d probably have had to toss my own cookies with the kids on the side of the road, too. What a horrible and hilarious story.
Oh my gosh, I am such a sympathetic puker that just the description of this nearly had me hurling! Yes, that qualifies as a top icky moment in my book!
