The kids get dropped off at school, all ready for their day. Bellies full, dressed in a style that lets you know they play sports, but still dressed well enough that I’d be okay if pictures were snapped for the yearbook. Their backpacks and lunches are packed, their teeth have been brushed, their hair combed. Meanwhile, I’m hiding behind a large pair of sunglasses, most likely in my pajamas or something that would cause not just the kids but me major embarrassment should I need to step out of the car in the pick-up line. I probably haven’t eaten yet, and most likely the only task I have taken care of in the bathroom was to pee, since it’s not like a mom my age has any more of a concept of “holding it” than your average toddler.
If I treated my kids the way I treat myself, I’d be getting concerned emails from the school. It’s almost a joke, how moms put themselves last when it comes to taking care of ourselves. Every now and again, I go on a kick when I remember I’m worth it, that a mom who takes care of herself is better able to take care of her kids. And it’s so true. So, my goal for the summer is to get into a routine of taking care of not just my family, but me, too.
I can look as good as my kids. They might look like they’re ready for a ball field somewhere, but they don’t look like they’ve just gotten done with a long practice. So I can look like I’m headed to the gym, and not like I just suffered through a long workout (unless I actually have). In “cute” gym clothes, not the stuff I should have tossed long ago. And while my long hair isn’t quite as simple to style as their short hair, I can do things like a quick side braid into a bun so it doesn’t look like we don’t own a comb in our house.
If I harp on it for the kids, I need to do it for me, too. I’ve lost track of the number of times I holler things like “brush your teeth” and “did you wash your hair” and “wash your face” through the bathroom door as my boys are getting ready. Really simple things, so I can do them, too, not put it off until later in the day, after they get theirs done. This goes for sunscreen, too. I’m very careful to apply and reapply it for my boys and yet forget myself.
