Our cat joined our family shortly before Christmas, allowing him to get used to the chaos that is three kids in the house. Because that was the normal he got adjusted to, he’s very much a people-cat.
Dobby wants to be in the middle of everyone. He’ll follow you around, sit on any lap available, and wants to nap right next to whatever warm body he can find (preferably right on top of the softest blanket he sees).
Since the kids are in school full day, Dobby is my little buddy during the day. He tends to get in the way of the keyboard while I’m trying to type since he thinks I should pet him instead of get work done, though he usually will settle in for a nap when he realizes that I do actually have something I need to do aside from pay attention to him.
Since Dobby spends so much time with me, it’s rather ironic that I was the most resistant to getting a cat. It’s not that I don’t love cats: I do. My main concern was the litter. Where to put it in a house with such an open floor plan, since I didn’t want it anywhere near the kitchen, ruling out the downstairs. We don’t have a basement, so that wasn’t a solution.
We put it in one of the upstairs bathrooms, though I still had a concern about the smell. I didn’t want to be able to smell the litter in our bedrooms- that’s not a relaxing smell. And I didn’t want anyone coming into our house to be hit in the face by the smell, immediately knowing that we had a cat.
We’ve experimented with a few different cat litters since getting Dobby. One didn’t contain the smell, one didn’t clump, one seemed okay but not fantastic, one had a texture that made our cat not want to use it, so obviously that wasn’t going to work.
Recently, we tried Cat’s Pride® Fresh & Light® Ultimate Care™. Other cat litter brands use lightweight fillers like paper or wood chips or light density rock that don’t absorb (one of the ones we tried didn’t absorb the odor), but Ultimate Care uses high absorbing clay–the same clay used to filter impurities out of cooking oils and absorb moisture from major league baseball fields. This clay means there aren’t heavy perfumes in this litter, so cats don’t reject it (maybe that’s why our cat didn’t like one of the other litters we tried. I assumed it was the texture, but it could have been the perfume).
Ultimate Care forms super hard clumps that don’t break apart so it’s easy to clean and scoop which is less work for cat owners. I appreciate this since I still shudder thinking about the one that didn’t clump at all. As for the smell, we took the 10-day odor control challenge and I have to say that I’m impressed. It’s not apparent by the smell that we have a cat. Just by the cat coming to find you to sit in your lap. You can test it out by looking for the magenta and teal labels for the Ultimate litter experience with Cat’s Pride Fresh & Light Ultimate Care.
