What Is Your Least Favorite Household Chore?

With three little boys in my house, you’d think that my least favorite chore would be cleaning the bathrooms. I have no idea when or if boys ever really develop perfect aim. But, it really doesn’t take that long to clean. I hold my breath and power through.

Or maybe my least favorite should be the laundry. Which I have to admit, easily gets out of control, especially with both school and sports clothes. 3 boys x 5 school outfits/week x 2-3 soccer practice outfits x game day uniforms x church clothes x pajamas x the number of times they randomly strip and then need something new to wear because they can’t find what they took off = a frightening amount of laundry. And that doesn’t even take into consideration wet pool/beach clothes during the summer or Hubs’ and my clothes. Eeeek! And while I hope to replace my ten year old washer and dryer that we picked the size of back before kids, I can still almost keep up with the laundry. Or at least, shove it all in the laundry room and not worry about how far behind I am as long as everyone has something clean to wear.

Instead, my least favorite chore is the dishes.

The dishes are my old nemesis. Going back to when I was a young girl and was first assigned this chore. I think that I was allergic to the dish soap we had in my house because my hands, arms, feet and even partway down my legs would turn bright red, swell a little bit, and itch when I was doing the dishes. Which my mother put down to me being a drama queen.

In any case, I hated it. Sometimes, when it was my turn to do the dishes, my mom would give me a choice: either do the dishes OR scrub the bathroom and kitchen floors plus vacuum and dust the living room and dining room. I always gladly turned over the dishes to her.

When I moved into my first place as a just-out-of-college teacher, it had a dishwasher and I was thrilled. Even though I was living alone and had a pathetic amount of dishes to wash- I still used the dishwasher.

But since then, Hubs and I have lived in a variety of places- some with dishwashers and some without.

Though we’ve had one here, it hasn’t worked for over a year.

So it was back to handwashing for me. Which led to using an awful lot more plastic/paper products because ohmygosh does a family of five create a lot of dishes in one day.

dishwasherBut yesterday, we had a GE® Hybrid Stainless Steel Interior Dishwasher with Hidden Controls installed in our kitchen.

And I might have shed some tears of joy over its beauty. And the thought of not having to handwash any more dishes.

I immediately loaded it up and ran a load of dishes… because you know that since I KNEW this was being installed today, I didn’t exactly do the dishes yesterday(and maybe the day before that *cough, cough*).

And while I don’t think I’ll ever love to do the dishes, I think maybe cleaning the bathrooms and doing the laundry are going to move to the top of my list of least favorite household chores.

What is your least favorite household chore?

GE Appliances has provided me with this dishwasher for review purposes. All opinions are my own.

There are the big things like cleaning bathrooms, mopping… but my least favorite chore ever of all time?  Emptying the drain traps in the kitchen sink!  EW!  I despise that chore!

I remember reading somewhere… maybe All I Needed to Know I Learned in Kindergarten? that you know you are an adult when you can just reach your bare hand in there and clean it out.

I do OK with laundry most days, and I am fortunate enough to have a dishwasher – so no complaints there. My least favourite chore is: scrubbing the tub! It’s so awkward and I end up almost falling in and always end up with wet clothes when I rinse. No fun.

      Oh, yeah- it’s very awkward!

Very nice dishwasher. When ours was broken, I hated doing the dishes. I hate putting the clothes away after I fold them. We don’t have enough space so trying to put them away leads to organizing drawers. Not a fan of cleaning the tubs and showers either.

I’m forever trying to find room for our clothes. It makes me crazy!

Nice dishwasher – I always think of it as a luxury since we didn’t have one growing up. My least favorite chore is vacuuming. To me, it seems too tedious – back and forth, here and there in a room that in two minutes after I’m done cleaning gets messed up by the dog, kids or hubs tracking in or dropping stuff all over it!

We didn’t have one, either. My parents still don’t and they don’t see the point in one, either. I think they are a bit crazy. 😉

Don’t like bathrooms either, but the worst is the laundry! It’s always an issue at my house.

I don’t like doing the bathrooms, but dishes are probably my least favorite. Laundry is one of my favorites as long as I keep it on schedule. I love pulling the nice warm clothes out of the dryer and folding them, especially this time of year.

I don’t mind the folding so much- it’s the putting away that hangs me up!

I’m super jealous. I hate the dishes, and don’t have much time for them so boyfriend usually does them for me, and I’m responsible for a lot of the bigger cleaning on my days off. It works for us.

Hey there. First time reader here! And its weird your topic is least favorite chore b/c I’m doing chores today as I do every day. I’d either say laundry since I feel like I do 4 or 5 a day due to a family of 4 or I could say cleaning the bathrooms or mopping

      March 19, 2013 at 11:19 pm

      Welcome! 🙂

That’s a lot of laundry! Though I’m forever behind and end up doing tons all in a day or two, so I’m not sure how much we make in a single day.

Laundry is definitely my least favorite– doing it is fine it is putting the clothes away that I hate.

That’s what gets me, too. I should take a pic of my loveseat. Or not. B/c it’s embarrassing.

I hate laundry. Partly because I know some of it isn’t even dirty, just put down the chute because my boys are too lazy to fold it and put it away. I don’t mind the washing, drying and folding but the putting away makes me nuts because I open a drawer, it’s inevitably trashed, I have to straighten it, there is a trickle-down effect and it turns into a day-long ordeal.

Oh, I hate the clothes that are actually clean but make it back to the washer anyway!

Congratulations on your dishwasher! Right now I’m procrastinating on washing up our dinner dishes (and reading about your dishwasher is a great way to do it!)

I’m terrible about doing them right away. I’m hoping the dishwasher helps motivate me.

    Ironing. I can’t stand it!
I think I spend more time doing dishes than actually prepping and cooking meals, I need a dishwasher!

I can’t even tell you the last time I ironed. That’s the beauty of living in yoga pants. 😉

It’s a toss up between folding and putting away the laundry and dusting.

My dishwasher works like crud… I won’t lie, I’m totally jealous! I need to get on this review wagon… mine is a GE, but it doesn’t work very well! 🙁

    • Shell says

      March 19, 2013 at 11:25 pm

I hate putting away laundry. I always have a pile somewhere. Usually smack in the middle of the living room.

Have you tried a good detergent? GE was talking about how while a good dishwasher obviously helps, the detergent has a lot to do with it as well, especially with changes that were made in detergent in the past few years.

  15. Katrina says

    March 15, 2013 at 3:40 pm

I’d have to say that putting AWAY all the laundry is my least favorite chore.  I don’t mind washing, drying and folding it.  But I loath putting it all away.  The reason?  I always discover more work whenever I put laundry away.  The kids’ drawers are always in disarray and I end up taking the time to sort them.  The kids’ closets are always a mess, and I end up hanging things up and organizing it.  The linen closets?  Always messed up because kids do NOT know how to grab a towel without disrupting the pile beneath it.  So putting away laundry isn’t JUST putting away laundry.  It’s much, much more.  And I HATE it.

I think I dislike all the chores… But heavy cleaning I ignore so that must because I hate it completely.

I am so happy that you got picked for this and I hope you get to keep it!  I can’t imagine not having a dishwasher… Yikes!

I feel your pain! I HATE/DESPISE doing the dishes. I, too, have 3 boys. We were a family of 5 household and completely sympathize with you. Even with a dishwasher, I still hate doing the dishes. During the summer, we’ve bought disposable plates, cups and silverware but then I start feeling guilty of the waste being added to the trash. It’s a never ending struggle for me.

But, yes, dishes are my archenemy. It’s a constant battle.
