Over the past few weeks, I have been testing out just how green my thumb is. From early spring through late fall, my family spends a lot of time outside here in coastal North Carolina. But before this season, the only outdoor projects I’ve taken on have been ones that had to be done, instead of trying any for fun. With the help of The Home Depot Garden Club, I attempted some vertical gardening and now I have some tips to share with you if you want to try it, too!

When shopping for your supplies, ask for help from The Home Depot employees. That saved me so much time and also helped ensure I had the correct supplies and amounts of supplies needed.
For this vertical gardening project, just like for many of their other projects, The Home Depot Garden Club has a video explaining how to build a flower tower. They also have step-by-step instructions to help as you go along. While the video gave me the overall idea of how to build a flower tower, I consulted the directions for each step. It’s helpful to have your smartphone or tablet nearby so you can check with the instructions as needed.

Checking the directions for the flower tower.
The one part of the project that I was worried about was having to cut the galvanized wire. I thought that for that step, I’d have to ask for my husband’s help. But with the Wiss Tinner’s Snips recommended for this project, I was able to cut it without any problems. I did learn that it was much easier to cut the galvanized wire if I put one hand on each of the handles instead of holding them in one hand as you would regular scissors.

Much easier way to cut galvanized wire.
The Home Depot Garden Club directions mention lightly pressing the potting soil into the tower to prevent sinking- their directions are clear and only mention this step once, after you have the tower filled with soil. For some reason, I got it in my head that I needed to push down on the potting soil the whole time I was filling up the tower. Do not do this. Otherwise, it will be very hard to make room to insert the flowers. In other words, follow their directions!
Also, leave your work gloves on when you are inserting your flowers. I actually made two flower towers and with the first, I thought I needed to really #digin with my hands to make room for the flowers. But what I ended up doing was embedding dirt underneath my nails. Not the biggest deal, but if you have long nails like I do, you’ll want to keep those gloves on.

No dirt under my nails the second time around.
One final tip I’d give you about the Flower Tower project is to keep in mind that the picture you see on The Home Depot Garden Club of this vertical gardening project is one that is completely finished and has been given time to bloom. When I first finished my flower tower(you can see my immediate results in my own flower tower video), I thought I had majorly messed up and that mine wasn’t going to look nice at all. But it’s had some time to grow a little bit and as the flowers are blooming, it’s looking so much better. I feel confident that given even more time, it will be beautiful!

My flower tower has grown so much in a week!

Something like this would look great in front of the door to our screened in porch. The height really does make a difference over your everyday potted plants.
Also, I have the same exact gloves. I had a decent pair but when I saw these a year ago, I grabbed them. Gardening is more fun when you like all of your tools…including your gloves. 🙂
Aren’t they cute? I couldn’t resist!
You made some good points there. I checked on the net for additional information about
the issue and found most people will go along with your views on this website.
