Due to the desire of the boys in my house to run around naked all the time(or at least, in nothing but underwear/diapers), the following rules are in place:
Pants must be worn at the dinner table. You want to eat, you must have on more than underwear. Or socks.
Pants are required if you wish to answer the door. Even if you are almost sure it’s your grandma, you must put on pants. The UPS man is more than a little freaked out by naked boys running to the door yelling “Package here!”
Leaving the house requires pants. This includes getting the mail and going to pick up one of your brothers from school. No, I will not take “naked man” with me to school, so please stop asking.
If company is coming over, you must put on pants.
When the temperature is below 50 degrees outside, you must wear both pants and a shirt, even though we are inside the house.
The proper place to get dressed for the day is NOT in the entranceway of our home, where the neighbors can see through our double glass doors.
Underwear, a shirt, pants/shorts, and shoes are all required for school. Socks are negotiable: the rest of the items on this list are not. The same goes for outings to the store, church, the playground, and all restaurants, even those that give away toys with your meal.
Tell me that kids eventually grow out of this stage! Do your kids actually like to wear clothes?
my kids love to be naked so much that I have the underwear rule…to sit on my couch or eat a meal one must have underwear on…
I can't force the pants thing, cuz um, I usually don't have any on at home either! just a t shirt and some undies, maybe a pair of the hubs boxers…
geez…I wonder where they get it…
my kids all have varying degrees about how much/what clothes they want to wear. All of them go to school so, I expect them to dress by school dress code.
Secondly, I have three boys and one girl. I don't want to raise prudes, but I think there should be a certain level of respect. Therefor, I expect them to be moderately covered.
JDaniel loves to run around without clothes. I have to tackle him and pull them on him.
These are great rules!
LOL
Since it is cold here I have no trouble with getting clothes on the boys. Sure after tubs they like to do a little naked dance, but within 5 min they are dressed.
I have already posted about Evil's desire to be naked… and outside. My fear is she is going to be a stripper if something doesn't give.
OMG…I need these rules! Lately, the Crazies have made a contest out of who can get naked quicker…right before dinner!!! What is up with that?
This made me smile. I remember on Thanksgiving dinner that my dad attended in his underwear. Some boys never get it.
Note: Now that he's 60, he willingly wears pants all of the time.
My little dude is the same way. LOVES having his pants off. And he loves having his hands down his pants too. WTF?
My boys run around nude all day long!!! What is with it? I dont know when they outgrow it but from what I hear its a long time!
I'd like to tell you that it does. Okay, for the most part, mine will keep clothes on at the appropriate times now that they are 11 and 7 but just a few months back, we caught the two of them and their 13year old cousin stripped down to their underwear and running around outside throwing the football, at dark and in the cold, at their grandmother's house. It is down in the woods, but still!
This is great, my girls will always wear clothes but my boys? The older they get the faster they strip. I thought it was just my house. We have a "you must wear underpants at the dinner table rule." They are little so it is still sort of cute but according to your post this may last until it is not so cute anymore???
A glimpse into my future, I think. Rory is obsessed with picking out her clothes right now, so I'm safe there. But I bet little man would love to roll around naked. I'm going to remember this rules! π
how funny! I never had problems with my girls wanting to be naked, but my little brother used to tear off his diaper and run down the street so much, my dad had to use duct tape to keep it on.
Those are good rules. My kids usually wear clothes but it is really cold here. Every now and then, they randomly get naked to run around.
Those rules are awesome! Now, if you could just tell me how to get a 15-month-old to listen to them! I swear, my child is the same way … she's always tugging at her sleeves. She won't even keep a bib on! Good luck implementing the rules!
By not wearing pants, maybe they're helping to cut back on the never ending laundry?
My kids don't like socks and shoes, no matter how cold it is. They would probably go outside in the snow wearing flip-flops if I let them! In the summer, my boy has an aversion to shirts.
Think about husbands.
Think about how much they enjoy parading around their junk naked.
No, they don't outgrow it.
π
My 11 yr old still prefers to run around in undies year round if we are in the house. Even if company shows up we have to make him go get on clothes. He is my naked lad
why why why? I swear the aversion o pants is a universal boy thing…. UGH!!!!!! I love your rules.. i think im gonna print them out
LOL, love your list! CamCam is my naked boy, as I've blogged about MANY times. Right now he's running around in just a diaper, no matter how many times I dress him during the day he strips down. When I tell him he has to put clothes on before we can leave the house I get a big, whiney "Whyyyyy?" I guess some kids just love the freedom. Or they're naturally hot.
This really put a smile on my face this morning. Personally, I do enjoy a pantsless baby boy, however I'm sure it's not as cute as they get older. My favorite rule is that you must put pants on while answering the door. Thanks for the laugh!
lol sounds like my lil one
I'm laughing while I'm reading this knowing that this will be me all too soon. My kid already screams bloddy murder when I get him dressed. I'm just happy he has not figured out how to take his clothes off on his own yet!
I would get Alex a shirt with his personal motto of "Clothing Optional" but I don't think I could get him to wear it.
Hayden rarely wears pants. We aren't as "strict" with our rules as you – he just has to wear pants when we go out and when we have visitors. He can eat at the dinner table without pants, he can answer the door without pants on, and the temperature outside has no impact on his pants-wearing. I don't know why he prefers to not wear pants, but he does. He does wear a shirt and underwear though… so I suppose it could be worse!
This is totally my daughter!
We have the alomost the exact same rules at our house! I am so glad we are not the only ones π
The only time my kids disrobe is when they are wrestling and they want to take their shirts off. Buster actually really dislikes having his pants off. If I have to change a pull up or he goes potty shortly before bed, I try to keep his pants off and he has a fit.
Bwhahaha Package here.. Oh sometimes I just know I missed out on some good fun with my house full of only girls:) Thanks for the giggle this morning!
Lol! My daughter calls herself "undies girl" when she decides to hang out in a t shirt and undies, usually at the end of the day. My son thinks naked is best but will settle for a diaper. Thankfully we live in a warmer climate!
Wow! Your demands are so unreasonable!
On the other end of the spectrum, my son may end up being a never-nude. He's never wanted to be naked, and I've just always had clothes on him. lol If he's missing an article of clothing, he can't do anything until I've replaced it. I think mine is weirder than yours!
Cameron does not seem to care either way but Sarah Hazel loves to be without pants. And of course everytime she is naked is when she chooses to hang out in the doorway and watch cars go by.
My oldest three are embarassed for me to see their "package". Most of the time.
They still take a while in the morning though to wake up enough to realize they are walking around in their undies.
So yes…it gets better.
My kids didn't go through the naked stage, however, my granddaughter, if she is "dressed", she's either missing her top or her bottoms.
This:
The UPS man is more than a little freaked out by naked boys running to the door yelling "Package here!"
Was hilarious.
My daughter never went through a naked phase, but we live where it's freezing so maybe that helps? Jack up the AC!
glad to hear that "clothing optional" is pretty common among the younger set . . . right now we're just happy if he leaves his clothes on at OTHER PEOPLE'S houses.
My children LOVE to be naked. My son is obsessed with his underwear so when people meet him, he might show them…
Bud would happily walk around naked all the time if I would let him. And Baby Girl takes off her pants just as soon as she gets home from school.
I can understand wanting to change into something more comfortable, but at least put on some pajama pants.
My child, a girl, pretty much wants to be naked for a good half hour before getting dressed in the morning and for a while at night before pj's too – sometimes from the minute we get home at 6pm. Depends on her mood. She just turned five.
My brother has three boys under the age of 10 and yeah, someone is always naked from the waist down.
My kids have always preferred clothes, but maybe they are afraid that I will start thinking it's OK for ME to be naked, and that's just scary.
My children, for the most part, don't mind wearing clothes (in the winter, summers another story), but my hubs sits around in his boxers all the time.
This is hilarious especially today since my son declared that he wanted to be "Nekkid"
Yup, all morning he's been running around wearing nothing but underwear…socks are optional.
I have not had this problem yet, thank goodness, and with boys I worry for sure.
Nope, they even asked for socks this morning…weird. But I did it.
this made me giggle. π
Okay I may have literally snorted when I read about the UPS guy and the package π Reminds me of salon scene in Legally Blond.
That is one benefit to having at least one girl- helps the boys keep their pants on. hmm that sounds really weird
My brother was very free with himself as a kid, constantly running out in to the court completely naked or with his undies. He eventually grew out of the completely naked, but was pretty comfortable just being in his boxers.
Package here for sure! Too funny. Parallel lives! Thank you for your kind words about our dog, Guinness. Hearing everyone's words of encouragement and sympathy has been really helpful.
Hope you're having a Happy Presidents Day!
Lots of yummy love,
Alex aka Ma, What's For Dinner?

My boys always wear pants. Only the oldest likes to sleep in his unders. But I wish they would all learn to pee with the door shut! I am about sick of seeing my 9 yr olds butt! lol
LOL! My boys did this too. It sure made potty training easy hahaha.
And yes, they do grow out of it, as I now have 4 fully clothed boys in my house. But, uh….wait until they are teenagers and you're begging them to put deodorant on. The joys of boys….
Okay seriously, I don't know how many times my kids got to the door before I did with it all hangin out. HILARIOUS!
While they definitely like to have a few minutes of naked time each day, my girls are pretty comfortable wearing clothes. So comfortable in fact that Miss H changes her outfit now three or four times a day. Good for you for having rules about it though!
I have a girl, and I still have the same clothing issues with her.
What the heck? I never had that problem, but then I only had one. I'm sure when they all put their noggins together, they come up with all sorts of things!
My middle boy doesn't like to keep his pants on. There will be days – in the middle of the afternoon – he'll walk out completely naked – especially after going to the bathroom. I usually have to tell him literally about ten times to put his underwear and pants on. If I don't, he'll end up running around naked for the rest of the afternoon. Can you say 'exhausting'?
Kids? At least you're bigger than them. I'm always trying to get my husband to put on pants. Try THAT on a six feet tall army ranger. π
Hahaha!!! That is so funny. EVERY morning I take my 2 y/o's pajamas off, change his diaper & then he says, "I want to be naked". Naked means in nothing but a shirt and a diaper (or shirt and underwear, if I'm feeling energetic). I like your rules!
My children love clothes if it means trying them on in weird ways, which may or may not cover the appropriate areas. Sigh.
My daughter's current favorite outfit is a swimsuit bikini top and a hula skirt.
I might need to print this for my son. We've never had pants issues until he came along… he loves nothing more than the end of the day when he can strip down and run around naked!
Well you aren't exactly giving me a lot of hope for the future of my naked 3 year old. π
OMG – the mention of NOT getting dressed in the entrance reminds me so much of Kate! She hates pants, too, and we have a HUGE double window in the front of our house. I tell her she has to avoid that area because otherwise anyone passing by can see her.
my son has gone through this stage, but he still likes to be nakey and I have to chase him with clothes when he takes them off… I find the less time he spends out of clothes the better off we are.
They do grow out of it, faster than you want them to.
Really, enjoy it… it's adorable.
Living out here, my kids think it's always 75 degrees out. My son snuck a pair of shorts and a tee shirt to school and changed during the day. Then he left the brand-new pants and shirt on the playground and they're gone.
Not. Happy.
my boys love going shirtless for some reason – must be a male thing?
I think that might be a boy thing. My nephew is 8 and still hates to wear pants. He will take them off (or try if allowed) as soon as he gets home from school.
I still don't like to wear pants when I'm home!
I love that this is something we have to consider as moms. Thanking my lucky stars that Charlie is still a pants lover!
Hahaha! Yes, N is almost one and she already hates clothes. It's a daily struggle to put clothes/pjs on her … heck, it's a struggle to put on a diaper! *sigh*
Tyler is 8 and we still have to fuss about pants and SHOES
Ha ha, my brothers were exactly like this! Brings back great memories!
My kids haven't outgrown it yet, and the oldest is 13. He understands the need for clothing, but he'll try to wear shorts, a t shirt, and flip flops to school in the middle of winter. He flat out refuses to wear a coat.
Best line ever: If company is coming over, you must put on pants.
HAHAHAHAHAHAH!!
Bwahahahhahaa!!!! I have 1 girl and 1 boy- they LOVE taking their clothes off! What is up????
my kids love being w/out clothes. I nearly peed my pants reading your post. loved it!
I have a girl, so I think it might be totally different.
But….I love that you have a pants rule.
Don't have that problem yet, as of right now Sam doesn't understand clothes, but I know I'll be in the clothes trouble later lol.
Babe just started learning how to take off his shorts and he can get his tshirt off halfway. Right now he is only doing it when he pees or poops and then he takes his diaper off and runs around excited.
I think we will one day have to have a pants rule because my brothers all used to run around in the under roos!
I've never had this problem with Kooper. He likes clothes just fine and even in the summertime he typically has both shorts and a shirt on. However, KAMDEN? He wears underwear all the time. No shirt. No pants. No shorts. UNDERWEAR! When he comes home from school? Strips down immediately to his skivvies. WTH?
I have all girls, and they are often all 3 naked. At the moment, 2 out of 3 are actually fully clothed! But that is rare. We homeschool and are almost always at home. So if I can even get them to wear underwear, I'm doing pretty well. Shoes…now that's another story! They won't wear shoes anywhere. And I don't really push it because if they do "wear" them, they kick them off as soon as we get there and I end up hunting down shoes when I'm ready to go home. Not fun.
Shell, I'm printing this out and giving it to Tater!
My girls are polar opposites…they get all sorts of dolled up for dinner. Dress up clothes, tutus. The works!!
Haha, love the rules. Kaia's not too big of a struggle yet but someday she might be. The girl HATES being bundled up
OMGosh that is so funny. We had to force our oldest to wear clothes…and he still likes to flash his moon at us (he's 12)! I don't know what it is with butts in our house…but everybody like to share them!!! Except me…I keep it under wraps!
My daughter loves to be in her underwear. She'll wear her cute outfits when we're out but as soon as we're home, she strips down to her drawers.
ROFL!!! We had to make clothing rules after the sweet "Papa" from church was traumitized by the 12 little girls in our small group all stripping naked in order to play dress-up.
We still have clothing rules. I don't actually think they care about clothes until they care about the opposite sex.
Funny read!
Funny! As a Mom to three boys, I just have to say: Good luck with THAT! At 15, 10, and 9 I am still asking if they have on underwear and telling the 10 yo that hula dancing in nothing but socks is no longer approriate even if one hand covers his privates π
OH, thank you, thank you, I thought I was the only one! I am consistently amazed at my two boys' tendency to get naked and streak around the house. They even created their own theme song called. "We are the naked brothers and we hate clothes!" Thank goodness I have finally found the right community of mommies with boys!
