Three little boys live in my house, so I’m familiar with chaos.
It’s pretty much our norm around here. It’s not an unpleasant chaos, it’s just our reality: happy chaos, even.
And once a certain level of chaos has been achieved, we’ve reached The Chaos Threshold, wherein adding additional boys to the mix does not increase the level of chaos.
It’s why I said yes to all three of my boys when they wanted to invite friends over yesterday. There’s really not much of a difference between having three boys here between the ages of 5-10 and having six here between the ages of 5-10. It’s The Chaos Threshold, where it would take a lot more than that for any noticeable increase in chaos to be observed.
In fact, in an odd twist of logic, sometimes adding additional boys enacts the Diminishing Law of Chaos, whereby adding additional chaos-inducing factors(aka little boys) actually produces a calming affect wherein the collective chaos exhibited by the group is less than the sum of the previously attained Chaos Threshold.
Maybe it’s because 6 little boys can find all sorts of things to do that the three couldn’t do on their own, thereby diminishing the Boredom Factor. This one and that one can go off and do one thing, those three can find something else to do, and the last one can take a break and zone out in front of a video game. The groupings flow and the activities change.
It’s possible that the Sibling Postulate came into play as well, diluting that related-siblings percentage from 100% to only 50% has an effect as well.
At no point was our family’s Chaos Threshold exceeded during the four hours all the boys were here and the Diminishing Law of Chaos with in effect approximately 82% of the time, with an astounding 15% rate of they’re-so-quiet-I-better-check-to-make-sure-they’re-all-still-here.
Ah, playdates with kids mine get along with. Ever so much better than the random dumping of children I didn’t volunteer to be in charge of(which causes our Chaos Threshold to be exceeded and my desire for a vat of wine to increase).
In case you are thinking that the Chaos Threshold and the Diminishing Law of Chaos would get me thinking that I should have another baby, you’re forgetting about the Sibling Postulate and also the age-factor which states this only works with children old enough to have diapers be a distant memory.
