I can’t believe it happened.
No, let me rephrase that: I can’t believe it happened AGAIN.
Once and it’s just something that a lot of kids do.
But, when it’s twice in one week…well, you start to feel like a bad mom.
Last Monday, I showed you the pics of what happened when my boys cut each other’s hair. All their long, beautiful hair gone.
And so many of you shared stories of your kids doing the same thing or even you doing that when you were a kid.
No judgement, just laughter.
But, what if I tell you that for the second Friday in a row, my Bear got out the scissors and pretended to be a barber?
Good God, woman, don’t you ever watch your kids?
Didn’t you learn to put the scissors away?
Your kids are going to get really hurt soon.
What are you doing when your kids do these things?
At least, that is what I hear in my head. Trust me, I’ve said that and worse to myself.
And tried to defend myself but my responses sound weak even to my own ears.
He was in the kitchen, having a snack.
I did put all the scissors away. Except for the kitchen shears, which were dirty and in the sink. Didn’t realize he’d climb up on the counter and find them in there and use them to cut his hair.
He was out of my sight for less than five minutes.
What was I doing? Well, yes, I was on the computer. I do work.
Do I think that my children could somehow get hurt if I don’t keep them in my sight at all times? Yes. Though, they could still get hurt even if I can see everything they are doing…
I felt like a horrible mom.
And still feel guilty that it happened again. Like once is funny, twice is a total Mom Fail.
Let me remind you what my Bear looked like before any of the haircuts:
If it is any consolation the hair cut looks cute. I was most devastated by the little blondie that needed to get his locks cut off π I think I would have cried. Oh, I kids are quick so don't be too hard on yourself!!
Oh please, my twins did this to each other, they actually said, aged 2 "we were looking at each other like a mirror" FYI they are not identical & have different hair lengths!! One did a chunk at the back, the other, went the WHOLE WAY AROUND. So that twin ended up getting a chic French bob with a very short blunt fringe & totally rocked the look!!
Where was i, um, fallen asleep after a huge morning of morning sickness & the 4y.o. (supervisor) at preschool. Where was my husband, on a plane on the way home, he pulled up, woke me up, found twins & a hair trail up the stairs & kept saying "don't get up, you don't want to see this". I sew, i have dozens of scissors, they had never touched them before & never since, it's not bad parenting, they will do what they want to do, aged 2 normally. Next morning at the hair dresser, they saw me coming & said "we see this EVERY DAY" & i believe it!!
My sister cut my fringe off when i was 2, it's part of life!! Hair grows back, i think your son looks extra handsome!! Love Posie
Oh Lord, Shell! I'm so sorry, but I'm am giggling uncontrollably over here. It's NOT funny, but it is… and you know that whomever judges you will be struck down with their own Rite of Passage tomorrow. I repeat: I CANNOT STOP SNICKERING. I apologize… you will probably never 'speak' to me again!
Okay, pull yourself together. It's happened in this house twice too! Please refer to this post:

Not a bad mom – I've walked in on my kids more times than I can count with scissors up to their hair (just good timing on my part)
Don't beat yourself up too much – and don't let anyone else beat you up.
He looks adorable btw… almost exactly like Cub!!
If life was all smooth sailing, if our children didn't do things that put us over the edge, if our husbands were super happy smiley people all.of.the.time and all our friends were perfect – what on earth would we blog about?
Hang in there, we will toast the end of a 'hair'a at Blissdom!
ok that was supposed to be symbolic of era in case anyone missed it π
He was just telling you that he wanted his hair shorter! If he cuts it again, just remember that he is wanting a buzz cut and give in… He'll be a cute little GI Joe!!
Don't worry you're not a bad mother, just a mother who can't get her sons haircut wishes right….LOL
Just be glad he's a boy. It is much worse when they are girls. Boys can have a shaved head an be ok.
Things like this happen give yourself a break. π
Enjoy today.
I totally don't think you're a mom failure…
you had them in the sink..
that's one ambitious little boy! not a bad mommy…
I think that the haircuts are adorable either way! π totally cute! – and boys will be boys!
He still looks adorable, but thank goodness he didn't cut his hair all the way down to his scalp!
I caught my son the other day snooping around the kitchen. I don't know what he was doing but he was trying to get into something.
Maybe your guy really wants short hair. It looks really cute on him.
LisaDay
lol.. okay… in all seriousness, to beat yourself up THIS much as to say you're a horrible mom over your kid getting scissors… girl stop that right now! It isn't like you put them on his art table and subliminally messaged him to cut his finger off… it was a mistake – and boy do those happen around here routinely!
And, I do like his short hair… he's super cute! No harm, no foul. π
You're not a bad mom! Jeepers. We've all had our lousy mom moments. None of those thoughts even crossed my mind. Well, I guess the only thing that DID cross my mind is, "Well, heck, where IS a good place to keep the scissors so MY kid doesn't find them? It sounds impossible!" lol
Here is what is more important: he looks extremely happy. This means you likely kept your cool & didn't berate him in an ugly way. That alone makes you a patient, loving & awesome mom. π
Some kids are determined…very very determined. Bubby is that way. He can wait me out days to accomplish something he wants to do (and I am not joking). He just waits for me to slip up and for the opportunity arise again.
I'm thinking he liked his brother's shorter cuts and wanted to follow suit.
Girl please! If I just began to tell you the things our girls did while right under my nose you'd realize that IT HAPPENS. But, it doesn't make us bad moms. Not to mention the fact that, once they decide they're going to do something, they're going to do it. And, being the crafty little angels that they are, kids will find a way. And anyone who says their kids have never done anything like this before is probably lying. LOL Roll with the punches sweetie! You're doing fine.
They're gonna get up and around and into things. They're kids. This is normal – you can't be on top of them every minute. And if you were? You'd just criticize yourself for a whole new set of things. You're doing great shell
You're not a horrible mom! Your son looks adorable with his new haircut(s).
My daughter cut a patch of her waist length hair to about five inches long. And, my niece cut another niece's bangs to one inch long.
At least your son stuck to a trim rather than a hack job!
No way, you're not a bad mom at all! These things just happen, what can you do? He still is a cutie though!
This can't be any worse than the time Toot almost rolled into a lake because I was busy trying to get a picture of a turtle. lol
Blame it on the hair cutting place-they obviously made getting his hair cut too fun of an experience π
Ok, you definitely need to cut yourself a break. Shit happens! Accidents happen! Life happens! Some things will be your fault because you're human. Even when it is? Forgive yourself…you have to, theres no choice.
Okay, so the kid was adorable before and yet he just keeps getting cuter! ADORABLE. Oh and the mommy fail? Meh. I just say your kids are incredibly resourceful if they can find scissors in the sink. π
well he's a pretty good little barber, he looks cute. when #2 cut her hair, also twice, she did it down to the scalp, and it wasn't even correctable!
Oh Shell, if that makes you a bad Mom, I don't even want to know what I am. I left my kid unbuckled in his highchair and he fell out. Yeah, that is a bad mom:)
If it makes you feel any better, I think Bear looks super cute with his new hair cut!!
How about this as an upside…he keeps getting cuter with each haircut??? π
LOL. He still looks adorable. Maybe he has a calling, and is some kind of mini- barbering genius. My brother used to to try to open the sewer manhole in the woods near our house growing up- that's wayyyy more dangerous than some scissors!! You're an awesome mom!!
Shell, He's still SUPER adorable and you know what? Shit happens! Look at it as a positive thing: He is a very determined and resourceful little boy. Some day, that will make him very successful! π
First of all, you aren't a mind reader. There's NO way that you would know your son would climb into the kitchen sink and get those shears. There's not a SINGLE parent who just walks around 24/7 watching their child. Maybe if it had happened while you were going to the bathroom instead of working on the computer you might not be judging yourself as harshly. Life happens, your kids WILL be kids, and you'll all get thru it with a few cuts and scrapes to show there's been a childhood in your home.
If someone gives you crap, you send them my way and I'll put them straight!
~Mimi
you're like one of the BEST moms I know. I think that kids are just curious and BOLD. LOL
My little guys have such short hair that they wouldn't be tempted to cut each other's hair, they'd need clippers ..but I do worry about sword fighting with them. UGH.
he looks adorable..:)
He's adorable still! I love it even if he was being a stinker with scissors.
If you don't stop beating yourself up, I'm going to come over there and…beat you up.
No biggie. All kids sneak behind our back and do stuff we couldn't imagine.
TRUST ME.
Umm hello mine is 10 and he cut his hair the other day with the ELECTRIC razor.. Why cause well daddy cut his hair with them.. sideburns NOT actual Hair son
You are most certainly NOT a horrible mom. It could be worse. Because my Mom and her brother were NOT allowed to use scissors when they wanted to play barber, they just did what kids do and found a way around it…..and set each other's hair on fire.
Or, you could be like me and leave a grill lighter (that you thought was broken) on the kitchen counter, only to have your 3-year-old find it, discover it is indeed NOT broken, and set your mother's house on fire.
My family seems to have bad luck with fire.
You're not even close to being a bad mom so cut (no pun intended) yourself some slack.
He still looks adorable and it will grow back eventually and he'll be your surfer boy again.
Bad mom? Hardly. I once found my toddler standing on the bar, coloring on her face with permanent marker.
Oh No!!! Little stinker!! ANd his hair was so beautiful…makes ya want to growl at him, doesn't it??!!! Don't beat yourself up, I think kids come out smarter than us anyway!!
He looks adorable! A few weeks ago I had Allison in the bathtub and I turned my back for a minute to clean up the bathroom sink, Allison grab my razor I didn't have up high enough and decided she wanted to shave and cut her lip a tiny bit. I felt horrible.
If anyone does pass that kind of judgment on you, they obviously have no children. Or maybe just one that they hover over. Ooops…now I am doing it! Seriously though. Not a mom fail. Just a fact of life I think.
It happens to everyone. Maybe not twice in such a short time period, but you never know what kids are thinking.
Girlie, I can't tell you how many times my kids have done the same thing more than once and I didn't anticipate it. We only have two eyes. Sometimes I do wish they were removable or at least able to be repositioned, but anyway, don't beat yourself up. Maybe he is trying to tell you he wants his hair short?
Well, he is a determined little guy. I have to give him that. lol.
Don't be so hard on yourself. Trust me. My youngest son has made me feel like a bad mom many, many times because he is one very curious and determined soul and he has cut his hair more than once too!
No judgement here. It's amazing what kids can do and how fast they can do and the lengths they'll go to in order to get it done. Silver lining? More blog material. =)
No judging here…still laughing. And you know what? The first haircut made him look older and now he's back to looking like a babe again! Yay!
You are not a failure! I think they look cute with their new do's.
No judgment here. I think it's more funny than anything. Maybe he has a future in hair?
You didn't even have to qualify that. I wouldn't judge you one bit. I think his second hair cut (professional) is even cuter!
He is still super cute!
It's so easy to be hard on ourselves. You know, my cousin had a story like this before I had my daughter and I thought, Why would you leave scissors lying around? Well kids are pretty sneaky and can ALWAYS find the scissors even when they are put up! Kitchen scissors, and knife block are now on top of the fridge here! lol
Cut yourself some slack (no pun intended) kids are curious and can find anything even the best hiden things …like the year 3 year old buggy found all his christmas and bday stuff and daddy gave it to him while I was working…It was well hidden and daddy should have been able to keep him from it but it did not happen… Its not like you were off passed out or something … it is still funny and he looks cute as ever
I'm sure you are far from being a bad mom. But, he does look cuter and cuter with each hair cut. I was expecting to see big chucks cut out of his hair! So, it's a blessing that all the hair cuts have been repairable. (And, I am still laughing.
Bah…that's not bad momminess. Cut yourself a little slack (or have the ever enterprising Bear do it for ya LOL).
Seriously, you cannot watch him 24/7 (well, maybe you can but if so call me I need to send you mine). Don't we all have Mommy FAIL moments??? Goodness knows I do…..
and the third time is a call to children's protective services…kidding kidding.
Look, I work in a Children's hospital and we see much bigger Mom fails than kids cutting their hair. We all have these Mom fails…that just means we're human and our kids are little shits π
Aw. He just wanted to go preppy. Are you going to deny him that? What's next? Taking away his polos? Refusing to let him join a frat? Not letting him put a keg in the backyard? It's what preppies DO.
π
I would tell you I've called poison control 7 times in 18 months for…
perfume swallowing
icy hot eating
air freshener eating
lube swallowing
even better?
I don't remember the other three AND Babe finds the scissors or a knife at least three times a week. Right now he just brings them to me to show me 'haha mom got them again!'
Nobody who is a real mother to real live children would judge you for this. Crap happens and there's no way a human can watch them all at all moments. That's how accidents happen, and at least this was just a hair trauma! Give yourself a break, mama.
If it's any consolation, he looks cuter every time! LOL
I'm thinking this might be the last time???
OMG! You poor thing. I know you feel awful, but it's a small price to pay to entertain all of us. LOL{{{HUGS}}}
AND…he's still getting no discipline. In fact, I just want to give him candy, and whatever else he asks for, b/c he's that darn cute!!
Don't beat yourself up. I loved this post!
I'm actually laughing. Anyone who would judge you is certainly NOT a mom. BOYS will be BOYS
omg…this is making me laugh (sorry). i'm so glad that other people have these kind of things too! i smashed matt's finger in the same door two days in a row…that damn thing came out like sushi the second time b/c i really shut the door – tight!
hang in there…there's always a crew cut (and he's still so handsome)!
Well, he's still a cutie!! Maybe he won't cut it again until spring and then you can see that you buzzed it to keep him cool π
Thanks for the shout out my friend! Isn't it nice to know we're all in the same boat?
Oh wow, cuter do! LOL…not a fail. A learning experience, right?!
I so like the new hair do! I wonder why he's so obsessed with cutting his hair, though? Very interesting..
Well I sure hope no one is out there thinking you are a horrible mom. You are not.
Kids do these things and as you know, they will do them right in front of us before we have a chance to spring into action.
BTW, your Bear is so stinkin cute…he looks adorable no matter what hairstyle he is sporting.
Yea, Sorry – but thats NOT a mom fail. It just simply doesnt qualify. Its just hair. It will grow back.
And actually – I think it looks better! Really, he looks really cute.
We have all looked away for a minute. Don't be so hard on yourself. Just be relieved he is fine and looks cute as ever with the new haircut!
He is still very handsome. I am your newest follower.
You know what? I think the short hair is adorable! Look at how much you can see his face- those shining eyes and that giant grin! Maybe he just wanted his face to show more!
I'm only laughing this hard because I can totally see it happening to me too. You're not a bad mom, you know that, you're awesome. Still…can't stop laughing.
Lots of yummy love,

Awwwwwww, okay I have to say… I think Bear looks absolutely adorable with his new haircut! Don't be so hard on yourself. We've all taken falls–and had bad haircuts–in life and we bounced back. If anyone is giving you a hard time for your mommying, send them my way so I can have a word with them. Not yet a mom, but I like to defend the best of them π *HUGS*
Over the weekend I put all of the scissors on top of the refrigerator. My daughter was attempting very advanced box cutting. I told her she has to explain her project before getting scissors out. It's tough keeping them up high. They creep back out at least once a day.
He liked the first cut so much he wanted a second one.. but he thought if he asked you would just say "no". π
Girl, it takes 5 minutes or less for crazier stuff to happen with little people around. No judging coming from this direction.
Glad no harm was done.
hee hee, all of us have done it. Think about it. I don't really know anyone without a child haircut story.
And for the kids, I think the new cuts are pretty cute…especially cubs, makes those beautiful eyes stand out.
oh my gosh its like hair of the week….boys are trouble!!!!
At least it could be fixed! Jordan's is seriously unfixable. π
And you weren't kidding when you said you knew how I felt!
WHY DO THEY DO THAT???
I had the scissors put up too. But my kids can get to anything if they want to badly enough.
