It used to be that my period was just something inconvenient, but it didn’t really change much about my daily routine (other than being sure not to wear white pants- never had an issue, but thanks to books I read as a teen it’s still ingrained in me that it’s a no-no).
But these days, my period can completely knock me on my butt and make me miserable. Here’s how I’ll spend a day during that time of the month (and end up with a really delicious treat by day’s end).
Put on my comfy clothes and tie my hair back.
In a large mixing bowl, put 1 cup of warm water and then pour in 1 package (2 teaspoons) yeast. Let sit for 5 minutes.
Go change into a different pair of pants because I need the most-comfy ones, not just regular-comfy ones.
Add 1/4 cup honey, 1 teaspoon of salt, and 1 egg to the yeast water and stir.
Add 3 cups of flour and stir until dough forms.
Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 8 minutes.
All those little irritations (like just who put the milk on the left side of the fridge instead of the right and why can’t anyone else other than me replace the toilet paper) get taken out on the dough instead of just snapping at everyone around me.
Put the dough into a lightly oiled bowl. Cover with plastic wrap and a dish/hand towel. Let the dough rise in a warm area until it doubles in size (about 2 hours.)
Pour a drink; grab my favorite book and head to my favorite spot in the house. Read/nap until the timer goes off. If possible, ignore everyone else during this time.
Punch the dough down and divide into 12-15 equal portions, shaping each into a round ball. Place in a pan (I use a pie pan) coated lightly with cooking spray. Cover with a towel and let rise for another 20 minutes.
Go take a hot shower to get rid of some of that back pain/cramping.
Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
Locate my hidden stash of chocolate and eat a piece or 12 since these rolls aren’t ready yet.
In a small bowl, melt 1 tablespoon of butter in the microwave and then stir in 1 tablespoon honey. Brush this deliciousness over the rolls.
Lick the bowl because this stuff is amazing.
Bake for 12-15 minutes, until lightly browned.
Immediately eat two because bread is my love language. Then take the time to put butter on another two and inhale those. Realize that butter isn’t necessary, but put it on another roll because butter is fabulous.
