Holiday Road Trip Must Haves

The holidays often mean road trips to visit family.

While we tend to have Christmas wherever we happen to live, we have made exceptions, like the road trip from NC to PA when one of my nieces decided to make her appearance into the world on Christmas Day.

But with many of years of making that long road trip, no matter what time of year, we’ve definitely learned a thing or two and whether we have a 12 hour trip in front of us or just two hours, we prepare for it.

One of the things we’ve learned is that if we’re going to be any distance from home where it’s not convenient to dash home real quick for something we might need, then we need to have the essentials with us. We have one bag that has a change of clothes for everyone in the family, even if we’ll only be an hour or two away from home. You never know what is going to happen and it’s better to be prepared with that change of clothes than to have to try to find replacements on the go. If you’re already packing a week’s worth of clothes for everyone, it’s still helpful to have one bag you can reach into that has that change for everyone, instead of having to dig through multiple suitcases and bags, trying to find what you need. This has saved us time and irritation not only on long road trips, but also on trips to a soccer field where an unexpected downpour drenched us all when we were a two hour car ride from home.

We’ve also learned that snacks, paper towels, a trash bag, chargers for our electronics, scissors(one of my kids once got stuck in a seat belt we could only remove with scissors- we haven’t traveled without them since), and a first aid kit are all helpful on road trips.

Along with whatever we’re packing into our car, it’s also important to make sure that the car itself is ready for a road trip. Last weekend, I had to drive two of my boys to a 5K that was an hour and a half away. While that’s not terribly far from home, if something were to happen to the car as we were driving at 5:30am on roads that feel like the middle of nowhere… well, I don’t even want to think about it. It’s why, after I got 4 new tires put on my car last week, I posted this:

Before your holiday road trip, you’ll want to check out Sam’s Club Dare to Compare tire event. Your Sam’s Club membership continues to get you unbeatable winter deals on everything, including auto & tire services(and cookies- I never forget the cookies when I’m there).

Here’s how the Sam’s Club “Dare to Compare” offer works:

Bring a valid “all-in” quote from a tire sales and installation retailer to your Sam’s Club Tire and Battery Center service counter. The quote must be printed on dealer/retailer letterhead and dated within the past 7 business days.

The tire must be the same brand, same line, same load index and speed rating (service description) as the tire intended for purchase at Sam’s Club. Sam’s Club carries some club-specific tire lines – in these cases, Sam’s Club will compare the club-specific tire line to the equivalent general-market tire line. Sam’s Club considers the following tire lines to be equivalent and will price match accordingly:

  • Club-Specific Tire Model: General-Market Tire Model
  • BFGoodrich Touring T/A: BFGoodrich Advantage T/A
  • Michelin Defender XT: Michelin Defender
  •  Michelin X Radial LT2: Michelin LTX M/S2
