Getting into a Tween Hygiene Routine

This post is part of a series as a Type-A Parent Clarisonic Blogger. I received sample products from Clarisonic and compensation to share information about the product.

We have entered a whole new phase at my house: the tween stage.

Sometimes it’s sweet, getting to watch my son grow independent and into his own person.

And other times, it’s emotional and confusing (for all of us). There are bigger issues he’s dealing with, concerns he didn’t have when he was still firmly in the little boy camp.

I don’t have easy answers for most of it. But one new area we can easily take care of is tween hygiene.

Gone is the sweet little boy smell and suddenly there’s a bit more of a stink in the tween years. And while kids this age might notice it on others, they aren’t self-aware right now. I didn’t want to flat out tell my son he was stinky or that his skin was starting to break out because I didn’t want to make him feel self-conscious, but it was definitely time to make sure he had all the tools he needed to be clean every day. And that he knew how to use them.

Deodorant With a tween, I picked up deodorant rather than antiperspirant and chose a natural brand. Much as I don’t want to post embarrassing pictures or videos of my sensitive tween, I sort of wish I’d taken a video of his first time putting it on since it made him laugh hysterically and jump all over the bathroom.

Toothbrush, paste, and mouthwash Obviously, this is nothing new, but he’s gotten to the point where he does actually think about his breath and what his teeth look like. He still thinks it’s cool to have a toothbrush that looks like a lightsaber and flashes during the time he should be brushing, so he brushes long enough. If you can’t talk yours into this, an electric one with a timer is an option, too.

Body wash Until this point, all of my boys were using those 3-in-1 kids’ gentle body washes. But it wasn’t quite cutting through the funk of something like cross country practice. I still don’t know why boys all tend to gravitate towards Axe, but involving your tween in selecting what scent they want means you don’t hear Mom, I can’t use this, it’s gross. As an FYI: if it’s just the body wash, it gets them clean but isn’t overwhelming like the body spray.

Alpha Fit Men’s Cleansing My son’s skin was starting to break out a few month ago so I bought him a few different cleansers. The problem with all of them was my son not really understanding how to properly clean: he’d splash a little water on his face, sort of put some cleanser on it, then splash his face again or even just grab a towel to wipe it off. None of which was helping.

I started using the Clarisonic Smart Profile this summer and it’s the best thing I’ve ever done for my own skin (you can check out my before and after pics). Clarisonic devices cleanse skin 6x better than hands alone and they have automatic settings that will either beep or have a pause in vibration to signal to you that it’s time to move to a different part of your face.

As soon as I started using the Clarisonic Smart Profile, I realized something like that would be perfect for my son since it’s so easy to use and really gets skin clean. Though, I really didn’t want to hand mine over to him, that Smart Profile was mine, all mine.

So when I was sent the Clarisonic Alpha Fit Men’s Cleansing, I knew it had to go to my tween (despite my husband’s grumbling that he wanted it). It’s safe, gentle, and effective and helps clear up acne. Though most important: it’s so easy to use that my son uses it twice daily without reminders from me (or okay, without many reminders).

The first few times he used the Alpha Fit Men’s Cleansing, I did actually do it for him, so he’d understand how to use it, the pressure to use, when to move it, etc. But now, like the rest of his hygiene routine, it’s in his hands.
