Getting Back into a Workout Routine

Fall is when I regain my motivation to work out. Even though it will soon be sweater weather and those tend to hide a variety of flaws, it’s much easier for me to work out when my boys are back in school, rather than during the summer where they’re home from school all day. At least, in theory, it’s easier. I’m still having a hard time getting back into a routine. Here’s what I’m trying:

Eat breakfast when my boys do. If I wait to eat until they’re at school, I have an excuse not to work out since I don’t want to work out the second I’m done with my breakfast. I’d start work, get involved with something else, and then never get in that workout.

Drink plenty of water. Being hydrated makes me feel better. And less like I’m going to fall over when I do get that work out in.

Work out as soon as I get home from school drop off. No excuses, no getting wrapped up in work and putting it off until later, later, and eventually never.

Do a workout I actually like. No matter how much friends might rave about a certain form of exercise, if it’s not for me, I won’t stick with it. I’m more of a zumba or yoga girl, so that’s what I tend to stick with.

Start gradually. My goal is to start working out three times a week at first. When I’m in a good routine, it’s more like five days a week, but I know that starting off like that will mean I’ll wear myself out and not stick to it. But if I can start with three days a week and build up, I’ll be fine.

Still allow myself a treat. Depriving myself of all sweets will definitely make me cranky. I’m a bigger believer in moderation and making wise choices when it comes to snacks.

With Fiber One brownies, cheesecake bars, and cookies, I don’t have to fight my instincts. The new Cheesecake bars in Strawberry and Salted Caramel have 150 calories per bar with 20% daily value of fiber. I can go ahead and have one and yet not feel like I’m undoing the good I did with my workout.
