Fuel Your Active Teens

My boys have a ridiculous amount of energy. Sometimes I get tired by just watching all they do. So, the idea of eating for energy never really crossed my mind until we started getting closer and closer to the teen years. While my oldest isn’t quite there yet, he’s definitely a tween now, with the busy schedule (and sometimes the attitude) to prove it.

While we’ve tried hard not to over schedule him with every activity under the sun, he’s at the age where he knows what he wants to do and what new activities he wants to try. Currently, that means soccer, karate, running, basketball, and chess club. At least basketball and soccer only overlap for a few weeks, but the rest is pretty much year round. He could have chess before school and then running right after, then home for homework and a snack before heading off to soccer.

Thankfully, not every day is that hectic, but some can be. He loves those busy days and as long as he’s happy and still doing well in school, we’re okay with so much activity, knowing it will only get busier the older he gets. But, we do think about those all-important snacks that he’s grabbing after school to fuel up for running or afterwards, to get ready for the next activity.

That those snacks include protein is important since according to Jennifer Lintz, RD, LD, “Protein is responsible for more than we may realize. While it often gets credit for helping during periods of growth—childhood, adolescence, and pregnancy—it also plays key roles in metabolism, immune function, and tissue repair. It is found in every cell of the human body, so it is in our best interest to consume protein on a daily basis.”
