Usually, as soon as the calendar flips to November, I am ready for the holidays. Ready to plan Thanksgiving, make lists of Christmas gifts to buy, and look forward to all of the holiday festivities.
This has been an unusual year around here. Here in eastern North Carolina, our kids only just started back to school in late October to early November, due to the hurricane. So it still feels like early Fall, instead of like the holiday season.
So, I need a little help getting into the holiday spirit this year, though with simple things, since moms are always pressed for time… and this year, that is especially true. So, here are my simple ideas to get into the holiday spirit this year.
1. Put up visual reminders of the holidays. You don’t have to deck all of the halls, but a simple wreath on the door and a festive tablecloth signal that yes, it is time to celebrate. Make your wreath or pick up a pre-made one. Add a tablecloth to your list.
2. Watch holiday movies together. Nothing says “‘tis the season” like one of those super cheesy but incredibly watchable movies where the big city hotshot travels to a small town and falls in love with how the town slows down and celebrates the holidays (and probably falls in love with some adorable local along the way, too).
3. Create your holiday events calendar- but keep it simple. Give yourself something to look forward to by placing your favorite holiday events on your calendar. For us, this would be the local holiday parade, a Santa 5K, the holiday concert at school, and a work Christmas party. There’s more going on, but focusing on what you are most looking forward to helps with that holiday cheer.
4. Sample the tastes of the season. Pumpkin, peppermint, apple, maple… pick your favorite and find ways to incorporate them into your day. The tastes (and smells) can carry powerful reminders of previous holidays.
One new way my family is enjoying the taste of real maple syrup this season is with the new Maple Cheerios. They are gluten-free and can be picked up from Walmart, along with the rest of what you need for the holidays, making it a super convenient way to help get me into the holiday spirit. All of what we do for the holiday season should be as easy as using Walmart’s Online Grocery Pick Up… and taste as good as Maple Cheerios!
