The world is not always fair and people aren’t always kind.
Kids learn these lessons early on.
Painful lessons, but important.
We can’t shield our kids from everything.
We can’t put them in a bubble where everything is always fair and everyone holds hands to sing and dance together joyfully.
They have to learn how to deal with people who don’t treat them kindly. It’s not always an option to stay away from or ignore those people, since maybe we’re talking about their classmates, their teammates… and later their coworkers or even their bosses.
It’s actually doing our kids a disservice to try to shield them from everything.
To be able to deal with all life will hand them, they need a strong foundation.
A place where they feel safe.
To my boys, I promise this: your home is your safe place. Your home, whether it’s our house or simply wherever our family is together, is your safe place.
Here, we love you unconditionally.
You can cry when you need to and we’ll hug you or cry with you or leave you alone if that’s what you need.
We support you.
We believe in you.
We choose you over everyone else.
Here, you will be loved and safe, and hopefully happy yet safe enough to feel whatever you feel.
We’ll help you when you think life isn’t fair or when you’re dealing with unkind people, even though we can’t fix it all for you. But we’ll get you through. We want you to know that you’re loved here, even if you don’t always feel it everywhere you go.
This is your safe place.
I hope you always feel that, no matter what.
