There’s usually one day a month when I’m rendered completely useless, thanks to cramps and the exhaustion that comes with my period.
There are few more days when I’m inconvenienced and maybe a little cranky, but there’s always that worst day when I can barely move. And since I like any excuse to curl up with a good book, that’s my reading day.
It’s my comfort during my period (along with baking honey rolls). I’ll share my 6 most recent favorite reads with you in case reading is your comfort, too.
Reality Boy by A.S. King. I’ll admit that I watch plenty of reality TV. But what happens to the kids who are the stars of those shows when they grow up and have all their worst childhood moments available for anyone to watch? It did make me think about how much we as parents put out there about our kids on social media.
The Vigilante Poets of Selwyn Academy by Kate Hattemer. Another for if you are a fan of reality tv, especially reality tv competition shows. Some of that has to be scripted, right? And fixed? Of course it has to be.
The Beginning of Everything by Robin Schneider. You can be on one path and have something happen that knocks you way off that path. Yet people still expect you to play a certain part. There’s something that happens in the very first chapter that had me yell out “What? Did that just happen? CAN that happen? I’m never going on that ride…” You’ll see if you read it.
Where’d You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple. Bernadette is so kooky. I identified a bit with her in the beginning when she was dealing with the crazy moms at school, but don’t worry, I’ve never gone to the extremes Bernadette has. This was was just flat out fun.
The Future of Us by Jay Asher. What if you logged onto your computer back in 1996, with the screeching dial-up, and were able to see your Facebook page from today? And what if you weren’t happy with what you saw? This is a fun look at that possibility. No big attempts to change the entire world, just your own life. Jay Asher also wrote Thirteen Reasons Why, which is one of my favorite reads ever, but it made me ugly cry even when I wasn’t PMS-ing, so pick that one up with caution (or at least with a careful eye on the calendar).
Landline by Rainbow Rowell. Look, I love my husband. He’s truly my best friend. But I wonder what I would say to him now if my grown-up self could talk to the version of him from before we got married, the way the main character in Landline is able to.
What is one of your recent favorite reads?
