Bedroom Haven and Sleep Number Review

sleep number reviewSeveral months ago, I was having a really hard time falling asleep at night, even though I was exhausted. Though I can blame stress for part of that restlessness, you could also blame my bedroom and a few bad habits I’d picked up. I’ve made some changes since to make my room into more of a Bedroom Haven.

When it comes to getting ready for bed, a hot bath, a scented candle(I prefer fruity or beach scents), a good book, and a cup of tea are the perfect way to unwind before bedtime. Tazo’s Passion tea and Yogi’s Comforting Chamomile tea are two personal favorites.

But while I love to unwind with a good book at the end of the night, I’ve found it’s much more relaxing to use a small book light or bedside lamp to read rather than turning on the overhead light. That way, no matter how engrossing a book, I realize that it’s not still daylight and still manage to get to sleep at a decent hour.

Speaking of sleep at a decent hour… we all know that it’s so easy to be connected these days.  Smart phones are a great way to keep up with friends, family, and work. But, they also make it hard to end the day when you can get messages late at night and think you need to take care of anything that comes in immediately, instead of getting a break. I’ve had to make a decision that after 10pm, I will put my phone on the other side of the room.  It’s still there in the event of an emergency call, but I’m less tempted to check in.  It’s much easier to feel relaxed when I’m not hammering out emails in the middle of the night!

But in addition to those tips to start to unwind at night, I do think that your bed and bedding can have a lot to do with creating a peaceful bedroom haven and getting a good night’s rest.

Last month, I went to a Sleep Number® store to learn more about their beds and find my sleep number.  I’d heard about their beds, of course, but didn’t really think too much about what my ideal comfort would even be in a mattress. Our mattresses had been bought a week before our oldest was born almost 8 years ago because we wanted to go from a full to a queen sized bed: but since we were busy buying baby gear, we didn’t exactly put too much thought or money into it.

But at the Sleep Number® store, I quickly realized what I had been missing. Robin, who helped me in-store, showed me the difference between the pressure on my back when on a regular bed and when I was lying down on a Sleep Number® bed, adjusted to a 45(my personal sleep number).

But, aside from what I could see on the screen, the Sleep Number® bed just plain felt good. So I was excited to have a Sleep Number® m9 Memory Foam bed delivered and set up for us shortly after my store visit.

The absolute best part about this bed is how Hubs and I can have our sides adjusted according to how we like them: my sleep number is a 45 and his is a 75, so his side is considerably harder than mine.  Even the kids notice. Two of them want to cuddle up on my side and the third prefers Daddy’s side. Guess they have different sleep numbers, too.

When it comes to sleeping in this bed: it’s incredibly comfortable. I used to be a notorious toss-and-turner, always trying to find that right spot. I’d wedge pillows under my side and need one to throw my leg over as well. But in my Sleep Number® bed, I feel cradled. The bed perfectly fits my body and I don’t have a need to do all that squirming.

My husband’s favorite feature is the temperature balancing sleep surface, which is designed to absorb excess heat, since he tends to be warm at night while I want tons of blankets on and the fan off.

To go along with our fabulous new bed, we were also sent  Sleep Number® In Balance™ Sheets in a gorgeous Surf color. Hubs likes them for their temperature balancing material and I like them for how incredibly soft they are. I had no idea what I was missing by only ever buying whatever sheets were on sale and not looking more at the features of the sheets.

The cherry on top of my new Bedroom Haven would have to be the pillows. We were sent  two Sleep Number® AirFit™ Adjustable Pillows with European White Goose Down.  If I could make one more suggestion towards creating your haven in addition to simple things like a hot bath, tea, and candles, it would be to have good pillows.  Once again, these can be adjusted to fit your firmness preference. Or the valve can be left open and the pillow will self-adjust as you sleep. Hubs prefers to make his pillow firm while I like to allow mine to self-adjust. So glad they sent us two of these so we aren’t fighting over who would get the good pillow!

These days, if I have a night where I’m not sleeping, I can only blame work or really good tv shows, because I certainly have all the tools needed for a peaceful Bedroom Haven!

What are your tips for creating a peaceful bedroom?

I’ve always wondered about these types of beds and if they were really comfortable and offer a good night’s sleep. sounds like it’s done the trick in your house! I like to have lots of pillows around me and a nice scented candle can do wonders!

I never have the overhead light on for my nighttime reading and actually tend to leave the smart phone in another room – not that it really matters because people don’t generally call or text me too much. A friend of mine recently got the Sleep number bed. Her husband loves it and it has made a world of difference for him. She likes the bed a lot softer (20 or so) which almost puts her down onto the platform part of the bed. The sleep number people are being wonderful about helping her with her issues with the bed though.

  6. I’ve heard great things about the sleep number beds. We have a Bob-o-pedic foam mattress, which we love. A good mattress makes a huge difference!

  9. my cousin has a sleep number and she’s a low number and her hubs is a high number, and as a result he’s a couple of inches higher than her…makes me laugh…
so, uh, because I have to know….do you set the numbers of 50 when it’s sexytime so the bed is even? or just mess his side up?

I actually thought about mentioning the optimal “sex number” setting. Putting it all the way up to like a 90 or 95 is good. Otherwise, the bed is just too squishy. ;)

My parents have one of those beds and love it.  Yea, I try not to read or watch TV in bed- we don’t even have a TV in our room as I know my mind would never shut off then

I always wondered if Sleep Numbers were worth it. We need a new mattress (bought our last one when we got married) so I will have to keep them in mind when shopping, but price will probably win out for us.

We need a new mattress so badly. I’m pretty sure that is why I don’t sleep so well either. Ours is 10 years old. It should probably be retired. Glad you are getting a good night’s rest!

You are so right about not checking email too close to bed time. I can’t even remember how many times I have done that and then spent another hour answering the darn emails!

Sounds great. My queen bed is literally 15 yrs old, how horrible. I did get a great pillowtop mattress cover but i always look at the sleepnumber and love the temp part. Can i dare to ask the $$ and if they had financing.

  16. JM says:

I’m very confused. Did you get any off gassing from the memory foam in your SN bed? Trying to buy a new bed. Bought and cancelled the order of a tempur-pedic this weekend. Started googling the off gassing and it scared me to death.
